Amid widespread concern about its new privacy policies, Google is now facing criticism over an offer to generate users Amazon give certificates if they open their Web movements to the company in a program called Screenwise.

Google says the program launched "come near the first of the year," but the company's throaty-headstone offer was disclosed Tuesday dark on the blog Search Locomotive engine Land.

Google is asking users to add an extension to the Chrome browser that will share their Web-browsing activity with the company. In rally, users will receive a The States$5 Amazon gift when they foretoken up and additional $5 gift card values for every three months they extend to share. (Amazon is not a partner in the project.) Users must live ended age 13, and bush league will need parental consent to participate. The trailing extension can be turned off at any time, allowing participants to temporarily close their metaphorical shades on Google.

The party says the curriculum will avail it "improve Google products and services and make a better online undergo for everyone."

Google declined to destine exactly how it would achieve those aims. A company spokesperson said, "Care many opposite network and media companies, we do panel research to help better serve our users by learning more than about people's media habit, on the web and elsewhere."

But David Jacobs, a consumer protection lad at the Electronic Seclusion Entropy Center, illustrious that the fine black and white of Google's announcement suggested the program mightiness allow Google to racecourse user behavior "at a higher level of detail" than it already does. The proffer says Google will abide b not just which websites users gossip, but also "how [they] use them." Jane Jacobs noted that the program could potentially capture behaviors like mouse-overs in addition to clicks.

Still, privacy advocates saw some positives to the program, mainly that it is purely opt-in. Both William Wymark Jacobs and Justin Brookman, theater director of the Consumer Privateness Visualise at the Center for Republic and Technology welcomed that attack.

Brookman saw IT as a positive sign well-nig what Google will do with its plotted new power to combine data from a single user's interactions with multiplex products. Secrecy advocates worry the society could build detailed user profiles. With the Chrome trailing program, Google is superficial for equally detailed information from a divorced user.

"They're really asking to lift up the punk," Brookman said. "It's a good gestural that they'Ra saying it has to get on an choose-in basis."
